Arleigh Albert Burke, U.S. Naval Officer, was born near Boulder, Colorado on 19 October, 1901. He graduated from the Naval Academy in 1923 and served in the Navy until his retirement in 1961. A brilliant officer during World War II, Burke fell into disfavor in 1949 due to his opposition to adoption of the Air Force B-36 aircraft, but still achieved promotion to rear admiral and eventually selection as Chief of Naval Operations in 1955. George Henry Decker (1902-1980) was born in Catskill, New York. He earned a B.S. degree from Lafayette College in 1924 and commissioned in the infantry in the same year. In 1937 he graduated from Command and General Staff School. He was deputy chief of the Third Army and then the Sixth Army between 1942 and 1943. He made brigadier general in August 1944 and major general in June 1945, while chief of staff of Sixth Army. His post-war assignments included commander of VI Corps, from 1955 to 1956. ...
